Charlann Farms: Six Generations, One Family, One Field at a Time

A Yardley dairy farm that became a Bucks County sweet corn tradition — and never left the family.

Charlann Farms began in 1929, not as a vegetable farm at all but as a small dairy operation on Stony Hill Road in Yardley. When the Stewart family's grandparents, Charles and Ann, sold off the cows, they turned their attention to growing vegetables instead, combining their two names to give the farm its own: Charlann.

Nearly a century later, the farm is still run by the same family. Sam Stewart Jr. and his nephew Tim now carry the operation forward, growing sweet corn, tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins, and a long list of other crops across fields scattered throughout Lower Makefield Township. Their sweet corn in particular has built something of a local reputation, planted in staggered patches every five to seven days through the summer so there's always a fresh batch ready to pick each morning.

Charlann has also become something of a community gathering spot. The farmstand's Fall Festival draws families back year after year for hayrides and a pick-your-own pumpkin patch, and the farm's newer tradition — an annual Farm to Table Dinner — has quickly become one of the more anticipated events on the local food calendar. This year's dinner, hosted with Chef Joseph Garvey, brings guests out to dine outdoors among the fields, with live music from The Fermenters Trio rounding out the evening.

Whether you're stopping by the farmstand for late-summer tomatoes or planning ahead for next year's dinner under the tent, Charlann Farms is worth the short drive to Yardley. Six generations in, the Stewart family is still doing what their grandparents started: growing good food, and sharing it with the community around them.
