Rook Farms: Six Generations Deep in Bucks County Soil

Six generations on the same Ivyland ground, and still known for one crop above all others.

There’s a particular kind of quiet that settles over Bucks County farmland before the rest of us are awake, and the Rook family has been out in it for generations. Their roots in local agriculture stretch back to the late 1800s, when the family first began farming in Ivyland, long before anyone thought to put words like “sustainable” or “farm-to-table” on a menu.

Today, Rook Farms carries that same inherited knowledge forward. Six generations in, the Rook name has become shorthand in this corner of Bucks County for one crop above all others: sweet corn. Alongside their grain fields, the family grows a wide range of seasonal produce, from strawberries and peaches to pumpkins and tomatoes, but it’s the corn that keeps neighbors coming back, stand after stand, summer after summer.

There’s something almost old-fashioned about that kind of consistency. In a food economy built on shipping produce thousands of miles before it lands on a plate, Rook Farms has quietly done the opposite for well over a century, growing what’s in season, close to home, and getting it to local tables while it’s still at its best. Next time you spot a stand of sweet corn at a nearby market, there’s a good chance it started right here, on land the Rook family has worked since before the automobile was common on Bucks County roads.
