Newtown Market Day: A Bucks County Harvest Tradition Still Going Strong

Why one Saturday in October still feels like the old idea of a community bringing its work into town.

There is a version of a farmers market that feels very modern — matching tents, mobile card readers, cold brew, a canvas bag that cost more than the vegetables inside it. There is also a much older idea underneath all of that: farmers and homesteaders finishing a season’s work, bringing what they grew, raised, or made into town, and selling it to their neighbors. That is the tradition Newtown Market Day is trying to keep alive.

On October 3, 2026, the Newtown Historic Association will hold its 49th annual Market Day in the streets surrounding the historic Half-Moon Inn. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the center of town fills with artists, crafters, food artisans, colonial demonstrations, reenactors, live music, tours, and an old-fashioned hayride. The Association describes it as a celebration of the colonial tradition of local farmers and homesteaders bringing crops, livestock, and homemade wares into town to sell to neighbors — a custom that has grown to include fine artists, food trucks, and modern crafters alongside the history.

A Bucks County harvest, the way it has always looked

Market Day isn’t just held near historic Newtown — the history is part of the event. The Newtown Historic Association operates the Half-Moon Inn, also known as the Court Inn, at 105 Court Street, and during Market Day the building opens for tours and interpretation alongside candle making, chair caning, basket making, wool spinning, quilting, and rug hooking demonstrations along Court Street. Two stages carry live music, food trucks and artisan vendors line the eatery area, and an old-fashioned hayride runs from Centre and Congress Streets for a small fee. Admission is free; proceeds support the Newtown Historic Association’s ongoing preservation work.
