Churchville Nature Center: Two Miles of Trail and Sixty Years of Paying Attention

Beside the Churchville Reservoir, the county’s first nature center has spent six decades teaching neighbors how to slow down and look.

Long before most of us had heard the phrase environmental education, a stretch of woods and meadow beside the Churchville Reservoir was already practicing it. The Churchville Nature Center opened in 1964 as the very first nature center in Bucks County, and it still sits on the same sixty-five acres of preserve in Northampton Township, run by the Bucks County Department of Parks & Recreation. It shares our name, and after this many years it feels a little like sharing a street with a very patient, very knowledgeable neighbor.

Today the preserve is laced with two miles of trails that stay open from dawn to dusk, winding past native wildlife gardens and back toward a visitor center full of exhibits, open Tuesday through Sunday from ten to five. Around that simple loop the Center has built a whole calendar of ways to learn: Lenape Village programs, nights at the Pleiades Observatory, campfire evenings, summer camps, and visits for school classes, scout troops, and birthday parties. The seasonal Native Butterfly House has closed for 2026 and is expected back in 2027, which gives next summer something to look forward to.

Fall is when the place is at its most generous with its attention. The free Saturday morning bird walks, roughly two hours over a mile-long round trip, move to an 8:00 start beginning October 3rd. October brings a Spiders Campfire on the 2nd, Autumn Astronomy at the Pleiades Observatory on the 16th, and an Autumn Changes Nature Walk on the 18th, followed by a Nocturnal Creatures Campfire on the 23rd. The calendar carries on into a Glow Night Hike on November 6th, a Natural Ornaments Workshop on the 21st, a Holiday Craft Fair on December 5th, and an Owl Prowl Campfire on December 11th. Some of the best things in this corner of Bucks County have been here the whole time, and the Nature Center is one of them. We like the idea of a Saturday that begins with binoculars on the trail and ends with the same people gathered around a table with us, still comparing what they saw, and we have a feeling the herons would approve.
