Newtown Theatre: Nearly 200 Years of Bringing Bucks County Together

A meeting hall in 1831, a movie house since 1906 — and still the room where Newtown gathers.

The Newtown Theatre, North State Street

Long before it was a movie theater, the building on North State Street in Newtown was a meeting hall. It was built in 1831 as a “free and independent anti-sectarian house of worship,” a place where traveling preachers, town meetings, and community gatherings all shared the same roof. Frederick Douglass spoke there in 1864 to a packed house, at 15 cents admission. By the 1880s it had been rebuilt and reimagined as Newtown Hall, hosting minstrel shows, lectures, and traveling performances.

Then, in 1906, the hall showed its first film — grainy footage of the San Francisco earthquake — and quietly became what’s now recognized as the oldest continuously operating movie theater in the United States. Nearly 120 years later, the Newtown Theatre is still showing movies, alongside concerts, comedy nights, and full theatrical productions staged by the resident Newtown Arts Company.

What’s stayed constant through two centuries of renovations is the theater’s role as a genuine community gathering place. In a county with no shortage of things to do, that kind of longevity says something about what people actually value.

Later this month, the theater hosts The Songs of Springsteen, featuring The E Street Shuffle — proof that a night out doesn’t have to mean a drive into Philadelphia. It’s a short trip from Churchville, and the kind of evening that fits naturally into a bigger night out locally: dinner first, a show after.
